Pour sa 28ème édition le Cully Jazz Festival a élaboré une communication extraordinaire, en collaboration avec le Festival Images' à Vevey. Ce dernier a proposé un des lauréats de son Grand prix international de photographie: le romand Claude Baechtold.
Claude Baechtold est un photographe baroudeur. Continuellement en route, il relie les quatre coins de la planète avec l'aisance du pendulaire. Un jour en Chine, il peut se trouver le lendemain en Afghanistan avant de repasser par la Suisse pour repartir pour le Grand Nord. Il est de ceux qui voient grand, et surtout loin. Il est de ceux qui tissent en permanence des liens entre les choses et les gens.
Le comité du Cully Jazz lui a passé une commande photographique avec pour objectif de relier Cully au reste du monde. Baechtold a soulevé ce défi en se livrant à un énorme jeu de "Memory" qui consiste à créer des paires d'images insolites; à confronter les réalités quotidiennes du bourg avec des instantanés exotiques pris dans des pays lointains. Au final, les analogies sont à la fois pertinentes (parfois même impertinentes), intrigantes et tendrement poétiques.
Loin des clichés usuels liés au monde du jazz, le résultat de ce travail fait l'objet d'une exposition en plein air imaginée par le Festival Images'. Déclinées en formats géants, ces paires de photographies sont à découvrir au coeur de la gare CFF de Cully. Mais elles font également l'objet d'un livre exceptionnel - édité spécialement pour l'occasion - et disponible à la boutique du festival ainsi qu'à la galerie davel14. http://www.baechtoldsbest.com/
A photographer, a book, an exhibition
For the 28th Cully Jazz Festival, we have come up with an extraordinary communication strategy, in collaboration with the Festival Images’ in Vevey. The latter suggested one of the nominees for the International Grand Prize of Photography : Claude Baechtold.
Claude Baechtold is a globetrotting photographer. Always on the road, he skips from one end of the world to the next. In China one day, he could be in Afghanistan the next, before coming back to Switzerland before going on to the Great North. Here is a man who likes to think big, and far too! Here is a man who likes to weave men and things together.
The Cully Jazz Comity asked him to build a photographic bridge between Cully and the rest of the world. Baechtold has met the challenge by playing a huge game of “memory”, and by creating oddball pairs of pictures; he confronts the daily realities of the town with exotic snapshots of faraway lands. In the end, these comparisons are relevant, saucy, intriguing and poetic.
Far from the usual clichés linked to jazz music, the result is an open-air exhibition imagined by Festival Images’. In giant format, these pairs of pictures are exhibited in the Cully CFF train station. But they will also become an exceptional book- published especially for the occasion – available at the festival’s shop and at the Davel 14 Gallery.
